Classic Recipe

  • Hook Standard wet-fly / panfish hook, 8-12
  • Thread Black or to match 6/0

Materials

  • Weight Lead-free wire, mid-shank (10-12 wraps)
  • Body Chenille (chartreuse, black or fluo colours) (1 length)
  • Legs Rubber/silicone legs (4 pairs (8 legs))
  • Hackle (optional) Soft webby hen or saddle (1 feather)

How to tie it

  1. Lay a thread base to the bend, then add 10-12 wraps of lead-free wire around the mid-shank for a slow, hovering sink; lock it with thread and return to the bend.
  2. Tie in the chenille at the bend and wrap the thread forward to one eye-length behind the eye.
  3. Wrap the chenille forward to form a fat, buggy body and tie off.
  4. Tie in rubber legs in pairs (front and rear) so the fly has plenty of splayed, wiggling legs. The movement is the trigger.
  5. Optionally wind a soft hackle collar, then build a small head, whip finish and cement.
