Bread Cube Fly

Nymph · Carp · Panfish · Largemouth Bass · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard wide-gap dry/wet hook, #6-10
  • Thread Tan or white 140 denier (3/0)

Materials

  • Body White/cream material (White closed-cell foam block, or spun and trimmed white deer hair)
  • Crust accent Tan/brown crust accent (Marker or light dubbing tint (optional))
  • Glue Clear head cement (Superglue to lock the body)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and lay a thread base along the shank.
  2. Either bind a small white foam block onto the shank with crossing wraps and a drop of superglue, or spin white deer hair densely over the shank.
  3. If using deer hair, pack each clump tight so the body is dense enough to sit low and soak slightly like waterlogged bread.
  4. Whip finish and remove the fly from the vise.
  5. Trim the foam or spun hair into a rough cube about a hook-gap on each side.
  6. Lightly tint one or two faces tan with a marker to suggest crust, leaving the rest white.
