Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry-fly/terrestrial hook (TMC 100), #8-12
  • Thread Tan 140 denier (3/0)

Materials

  • Body Tan carapace (2-3mm foam strip)
  • Underbody glue Clear head cement (Zap-A-Gap)
  • Wing (under) Tan/mottled material (Poly macrame yarn or comparadun-style yarn)
  • Wing (over) Natural case (Deer hair, tips over the back)
  • Hot spot Pink ears (Small clump deer hair as an indicator post)
  • Legs Barred gold/amber rubber legs (2 sets rubber fly-enhancer legs)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and lay a thread base along the shank.
  2. Bind a tan foam strip at the bend, add a drop of Zap-A-Gap under it, and segment the body with a couple of thread wraps as you fold it forward, stopping at the 65% mark.
  3. Tie in a poly-yarn underwing over the back, trimmed to the end of the body.
  4. Stack a deer-hair overwing on top, tips reaching the bend, and bind the butts down.
  5. Add a small pink deer-hair clump standing up as a visible hot spot for tracking the fly.
  6. Knot or bind a set of barred rubber legs to each side so they kick out.
  7. Fold the remaining foam forward over the wing butts to form a head, tie it down behind the eye, whip finish and cement.
