Classic Recipe

  • Hook Curved scud/grub hook (e.g. TMC 2457), 16-22
  • Thread Red (or match: worm brown, wine) 70 denier / 8/0

Materials

  • Bead Tungsten bead, gold or copper (1, sized to hook)
  • Body Micro/thin tubing or coated thread body (over the shank)
  • Rib/segmentation Fine wire or contrasting thread (1 length)
  • Coat Thin UV resin (over the body)

How to tie it

  1. Slide a tungsten bead onto the curved hook and mount in the vise. Start the red thread behind the bead.
  2. Build a smooth, slim tapered thread body from the bead down to the bend and back, following the hook's curve so it looks like a wriggling annelid.
  3. Counter-wrap a fine wire or contrasting thread rib for subtle segmentation, then tie off and trim.
  4. Coat the whole body with a thin layer of UV resin for durability and a wet, translucent, worm-like sheen; cure it.
  5. Build a small thread collar behind the bead, whip finish and add a drop of cement.
