Booty's Mahogany Emerger

Emerger · Trout · Advanced · 1 version

Tyer Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry fly/emerger, #12-14
  • Thread Tan Uni 6/0

Materials

  • Ostrich herl (trailing shuck) Natural gray-brown ostrich herl (a few fibers)
  • EP Fibers (wing) Cream/tan ep fibers (small clump)
  • Copper wire (rib) Copper (or gold) wire (1 length)
  • Dubbing (abdomen) Rust/mahogany brown (sparse)
  • Razor foam, 0.5mm (thorax) Tan fly tying foam (1 slim strip)
  • Rooster hackle Brown hackle (1 feather, oversized by one)

How to tie it

  1. Start tan thread and tie in a few ostrich herl fibers at the bend as a trailing shuck, almost the length of the body; pull to length and trim.
  2. Take the thread to the front and tie in a clump of cream EP Fibers as the wing, leaving a small gap of bare hook behind the eye where the fly will be finished; trim the butts. That bulk marks where the thorax begins.
  3. Wrap the thread back to the shuck and tie in the copper wire rib.
  4. Dub a sparse mahogany-rust abdomen forward from the shuck, tapering up to the rear of the thorax area.
  5. Counter-wrap the copper wire forward over the abdomen and trim.
  6. Tie in a slim strip of 0.5mm tan foam at the front of the abdomen, bind the butt down, and pull it forward to check the length. It forms the thorax.
  7. Tie in a brown rooster hackle (gauge it about one size larger than the hook) in the space between the thorax and the wing.
  8. Wrap the hackle forward over the thorax area, tie off, and trim.
  9. Bring the thread to the eye, whip finish, and apply head cement or super glue; trim the wing to length and clean up the underside.
