Classic Recipe

  • Hook Short wet, 8-12
  • Thread Various 6/0

Materials

  • Eyes Foam cylinder pair (big)
  • Tail Marabou (full)
  • Body Fritz chenille (full)

How to tie it

  1. Mount a short wet hook and start thread behind the eye; run a thread bed back toward the 75% point.
  2. Lash a pair of foam cylinders across the top of the shank just behind the eye with tight figure-eight wraps to form big booby eyes; add a drop of glue. These floats lift the fly off the bottom.
  3. Carry the thread to the bend and tie in a full marabou tail about one and a half shank-lengths long; bind the butts forward and trim.
  4. Tie in the Fritz chenille at the bend.
  5. Wind the fritz forward in touching turns to a full, fuzzy body, stroking the fibers back after each wrap; work up to the foam eyes and figure-eight a turn or two behind them to fill the gap.
  6. Tie off tight behind the foam eyes, whip finish behind the foam, and add a drop of cement.
  7. Pick out the fritz fibers so the body bristles.
