Booby Humungus

Dry Fly · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook Long-shank lure hook, 8-10
  • Thread Black 8/0

Materials

  • Eyes Closed-cell foam booby eyes (1 pair, medium)
  • Tail Black marabou with a few strands UV/pearl flash (one shank length)
  • Body Green (or red/blue) Fritz chenille (1 length)
  • Hackle Palmered grizzle cock (optional) (1 feather)

How to tie it

  1. Tie in the foam booby eyes at the head with figure-8 wraps and round the ends. (The Humungus normally uses bead-chain; the Booby version substitutes foam eyes for buoyancy.)
  2. Run the thread to the bend and tie in a black marabou tail one shank length long, with 4-5 strands of UV/pearl flash mixed in.
  3. Optionally tie in a grizzle cock hackle by the tip at the bend to palmer later.
  4. Tie in the Fritz chenille and wind it forward in touching turns to the eyes; if using the hackle, palmer it forward in open turns over the body.
  5. Figure-8 the thread around the eyes, whip finish in front and varnish.
