How to tie it
Tie on the painted lead eyes about a third of the way back from the hook eye, leaving room in front of them, and lock them down (a little super glue is optional).
Take the thread back about a hook-eye length from the lead eyes.
Tie in a tan or sand craft fur tail, with the bulky fluffy fibres removed from the butt ends, two and a half to three times the hook shank length, and wrap down to the bend.
Tie in three strands of pearl Krystal Flash on each side, trimmed just longer than the tail. Keep the fly sparse.
Tie in a brown or tan strung hackle at the back and palmer it forward, stroking the fibres back as you wrap so they lie back like shrimp legs. Capture it with thread behind the eyes and trim it off.
Invert the fly and tie in a collar of deer hair (about three-quarters of a pencil's diameter) long enough to cover the hook point and nearly reach the bend. Trim the butts and capture the collar with a loose wrap.
Move the thread to just in front of the lead eyes. Tie on a larger clump of deer hair (about pencil diameter or a little more) with the tips trimmed so the ends are blunt, using two light turns and letting it spin around the shank.
Work the thread to the hook eye, jump in front of the deer hair so no clumps face forward, and whip finish.
Trim the head: flat across the bottom (the fly rides hook up, eyes down) so the hair is a little shorter than the lead eyes, then a blocky head on the other side. Leave the lead eyes exposed and do not trim the collar.
Pull the tail and flash tight and add barring to them with a marker.
