  • Hook Standard saltwater flats hook, straight eye, #2-6
  • Thread Tan 140 denier (3/0)

Materials

  • Eyes Silver metal tape (Bead-chain, mounted so fly rides point-up)
  • Tail Tan carapace (Craft fur clump)
  • Flash Pearl flashabou (Few strands Krystal Flash)
  • Collar Grizzly/tan saddle hackles (1 webby saddle or hen hackle)
  • Head Tan carapace (Deer hair, spun and trimmed to a bullet)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and bind bead-chain eyes a third back from the eye, positioned so the fly will ride hook-point up.
  2. At the bend tie in a tan craft-fur tail a bit over one shank length, a few strands of pearl flash on top.
  3. Tie in a webby grizzly or tan hackle by the tip and wrap two or three turns as a soft collar in front of the tail, then sweep the fibers back and lock them.
  4. Wrap forward to just behind the eyes covering the shank with thread.
  5. In front of the eyes, spin two small clumps of tan deer hair, packing each tight, until you reach the hook eye.
  6. Whip finish, then trim the spun hair to a compact bullet/slider head, flat on the bottom.
