Materials

  • Weight Stainless steel bead-chain eyes, sized to hook
  • Antennae Shrimp Pink and Bonefish Tan Super Floss
  • Flash Pearl Diamond Braid, shredded/separated
  • Mouthparts Orange egg yarn
  • Eyes Melted monofilament with coloured (green) resin or epoxy ball on each end

How to tie it

  1. Wrap a thread base from the hook eye to the bend and back, then lash a pair of stainless bead-chain eyes at about the 75% point with firm X-wraps (a little super glue is optional).
  2. Fold one pink and one tan Super Floss strand over the thread at their centres at the hook midpoint, pull the front ends rearward and wrap the thread back over all four strands to the bend.
  3. Tie in a doubled strand of pearl Diamond Braid at the bend, brush it out with a dubbing brush to separate the fibres and trim it raggedly to about two shank lengths.
  4. Tie in a small clump of orange egg yarn just behind the eyes (the hot spot) and wrap back over it to the base of the tail, so it is about one shank length.
  5. Tie in a melted-mono eye with a coloured resin ball on each side of the shank at the bend.
  6. Tie in another strand of pearl Diamond Braid at the bend, bring the thread to just above the hook point and tie in two strands each of tan and pink Super Floss, anchoring them with a band of thread.
  7. Wrap the Diamond Braid forward, separating the Super Floss strands as you go to make three pairs of legs, and wrap the braid up to and around the eyes and tie off.
  8. Invert the hook, double over another long strand of Diamond Braid, tie it in on the underside and brush it out.
  9. Cut a large clump of shrimp Polar Fibre and tie it in behind the hook eye so the wing is about twice the shank length.
  10. Clip the butt ends, build a smooth prominent orange thread head and whip finish; bar the legs and the antennae with an orange marker.
  11. Bar the wing with a sepia marker, then run a wire dubbing brush down the wing to soften the colour; add head cement to the head and between the eyes.
