Bonefish Gotcha Shallow

Shrimp · Bonefish · Permit · Intermediate · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook Standard saltwater flats hook (Tiemco 811S / Daiichi 2546), straight-eye, 4-8
  • Thread Pink 140 denier / 3/0

Materials

  • Eyes Medium bead chain, silver (1 pair)
  • Tail Pearl mylar tubing (core removed) (1 inch)
  • Body Pearl diamond braid / flat pearl mylar (1 length)
  • Wing Tan craft fur (a sparse clump)
  • Flash Pearl Krystal Flash (4-6 strands)

How to tie it

  1. Cover the shank with a base of pink thread and tie in medium silver bead-chain eyes about a third back from the hook eye with figure-8 wraps. The lighter bead-chain gives a slow, quiet sink for shallow water.
  2. Tie in a 1-inch length of cored pearl mylar tubing at the bend, leaving a half inch as the tail.
  3. Tie in the pearl diamond braid and wrap it forward over the shank to the eyes, figure-8 around them, tie off and trim.
  4. Invert the fly and tie in a sparse tan craft fur wing over the back, one-and-a-half shank lengths long.
  5. Veil the wing with 4-6 strands of pearl Krystal Flash.
  6. Form the pink shrimp-egg thread head, whip finish and seal with UV resin.
