Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard saltwater flats hook (Mustad 34007 or equivalent), straight eye, #4-8
  • Thread Tan 140 denier (3/0)

Materials

  • Eyes Silver/nickel fly propeller (Small bead-chain or extra-small lead dumbbell)
  • Belly (under-wing) White uni stretch (Sparse bucktail clump)
  • Flash Pearl flashabou (4-6 strands Krystal Flash)
  • Wing (over-wing) Tan carapace (Sparse bucktail clump)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start thread a third of the way back from the eye.
  2. Bind the eyes on top of the shank at the one-third mark with tight figure-8 wraps, then a few turns under the shank to lock them; a drop of glue seats them.
  3. Invert the hook in the vise so the eyes ride down. Tie a sparse white bucktail belly in front of the eyes, reaching one shank length past the bend, then wrap back over the butts and behind the eyes to lock.
  4. Add pearl Krystal Flash the same length as the wing over the white.
  5. Bind a matching tan bucktail wing over the flash, keeping it sparse, half the bucktail you think, so it breathes on the flats.
  6. Build a smooth tapered head, whip finish, and coat with head cement.
