Bonefish Critter--Dumbbell Eyes

Streamer · Bonefish · Permit · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Saltwater bonefish hook, 8-6
  • Thread Tan 6/0

Materials

  • Eyes Silver metal tape (Lead/brass dumbbell)
  • Tail/antennae Tan/pink material (Craft fur or bucktail plus flash)
  • Body Tan carapace (Tan ice dubbing)
  • Legs Barred rubber legs (2-4 rubber legs)
  • Wing/shell Tan carapace (Craft fur over the back)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook, start tan thread, and lash dumbbell eyes a short way back from the eye with tight figure-8 wraps so the fly rides hook-point up.
  2. Wind to the bend and tie in a sparse tan craft-fur tail with a few flash strands, about one shank long.
  3. Dub a shrimpy tan body forward, figure-8ing around the eyes to lock them and build bulk.
  4. Add a pair of splayed rubber legs on each side to kick on the strip.
  5. Sweep a clump of tan craft fur over the back as a shellback and bind it behind the eye.
  6. Whip finish behind the hook eye and cement.
