Reference Recipe

  • Hook Mustad S71SNP-DT (saltwater), 4
  • Thread Pink (or to match)

Materials

  • Bead-chain or dumbbell eyes (large bead chain or 5/32in)
  • Krystal Flash Shrimp pink (~15-20 strands (tail) plus a few (overwing))
  • Diamond Braid Pink diamond braid (body)
  • Zonker rabbit strip Natural pine squirrel strip (magnum-cut, ~1/2in (wing))
  • Rubber legs Silver rubber legs (2 (Silly/Loco legs))
  • Loon Flow UV resin (head)

How to tie it

  1. Put a Mustad S71SNP-DT #4 in the vise, start the thread behind the eye, and wrap back about 18 turns.
  2. Tie in large bead-chain or 5/32in dumbbell eyes behind the eye with about 12 wraps, then 15-20 wraps underneath and a few cross wraps so they can't spin.
  3. Tie in about 15-20 strands of shrimp-pink Krystal Flash behind the eyes and wrap back onto the bend so it cocks upward (the fly rides hook-point-up); pull it back and cut it even with the eyes.
  4. Tie in pink Diamond Braid at the eyes, run it back to the bend, then palmer it forward, figure-eight around the eyes, and lock it in front by dropping and lifting the bobbin to trap it; trim.
  5. Cut about 1/2in of natural magnum zonker (rabbit) strip and even the hide end; invert the fly hook-point-up and tie the strip in as a wing close behind the eyes, then wrap back toward the eyes so the building thread slides the fibers into an even head.
  6. Tie a silver rubber leg (Silly/Loco Leg) on each side, placed symmetrically, and cover the bump.
  7. Tie in a couple of strands of Krystal Flash doubled over the top as an overwing.
  8. Spin the thread flat, take a few covering wraps, whip finish, then coat the head with Loon Flow UV resin and cure; trim the legs to about twice the hook length.
