Classic Recipe

  • Hook Salmon dry fly hook (e.g. TMC 7999 or Wilson dry), 2-8
  • Thread Black or white 3/0 or strong 6/0

Materials

  • Tail White calf tail (1 clump)
  • Wing White calf tail, angled forward (1 clump)
  • Body Natural deer hair, spun and clipped (4-6 clumps)
  • Hackle Grizzly saddle, palmered (1-2)

How to tie it

  1. Tie in a clump of white calf tail at the bend as the tail, about a shank length long.
  2. At the front quarter of the shank, tie in a second calf tail clump as a wing angled forward over the eye. The forward wing helps the fly wake and gives you something to see.
  3. Return to the bend and tie in the grizzly hackle by its butt, to be palmered later.
  4. Spin 4-6 clumps of deer hair up the shank, packing each clump hard against the last until the shank is full.
  5. Whip finish, then trim the deer hair into a cigar shape. Flat on the bottom, rounded on top.
  6. Palmer the grizzly hackle forward through the clipped body in 5-6 evenly spaced turns, tie off behind the wing, and finish the head.
