Bomb Drop Midge Larva

Midge · Trout · Intermediate · 3 versions

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Curved scud/midge hook, 20-16
  • Thread Red or black 10/0

Materials

  • Bead Tungsten silver or black bead (1 (the drop))
  • Body Red, black, or olive material (Thread base)
  • Rib Silver or copper material (Fine wire)
  • Thorax Black ostrich herl (Pinch of dubbing (optional))

How to tie it

  1. Slide a heavy tungsten bead to the eye, mount the hook, and start thread behind it.
  2. Tie in fine wire at the bend, then build a slim, smooth thread body following the curve to the 75% mark.
  3. Rib the body forward with 5-6 evenly spaced wire turns and tie off for segmentation and weight.
  4. Add a tiny dubbed collar behind the bead if you want a suggestion of thorax, keeping it sparse.
  5. Whip finish behind the bead.
  6. Coat the thread body with a thin layer of UV resin so it glistens like a live larva.
