Midge · Trout · Intermediate · 2 versions

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Curved pupa/scud hook, 16-12
  • Thread Black 8/0

Materials

  • Bead Silver or black bead (1 (optional))
  • Body Red, olive, or black material (Body glass / stretch tubing over thread)
  • Rib Contrasting indicator fibers (Fine wire under the glass (optional))
  • Thorax Black ostrich herl (Peacock herl or dubbing)
  • Gills White uni stretch (Small tuft of poly or Antron)

How to tie it

  1. Slide an optional bead to the eye, mount the hook, and lay a smooth thread base from eye to bend.
  2. Tie in body glass tubing at the bend, color it by choosing your thread base underneath (red, olive, or black).
  3. Wrap the body glass forward in slightly overlapping turns to the 75% mark for a translucent, segmented body.
  4. Tie off and trim the glass, then wind a short peacock-herl or dubbed thorax behind the bead.
  5. Add a tiny tuft of white poly at the front to suggest the breathing gills.
  6. Whip finish and coat the body with a thin layer of UV resin for durability and shine.
