Midge · Advanced · 2 versions

As tied by The FlyFish Fanatic (Rick Passek)

  • Hook Hends BL 354, 6-12
  • Thread Red

Materials

  • Body Semperfli Nano Silk (Red)
  • Rib Hends Body Glass (Red)
  • Gills White poly yarn
  • Finish Semperfli no-tack UV resin, then Sally Hansen's coat

How to tie it

  1. Wax the red thread lightly and start it at the head, laying a base layer to the rear and back to the head so the red shows through.
  2. Trim the end of the Body Glass to a thin tie-in point, tie it in and pull it tight so it adds little bulk.
  3. Wrap the thread down over the tie-in and back, keeping the body thin.
  4. Take one wrap of Body Glass at the butt, then open wraps forward as a rib, letting go of tension as you go so the segments get thicker toward the front.
  5. Pull the Body Glass tight, trim it, and build a small football-shaped head section with thread.
  6. Lay a small amount of white gill material on top of the shank, one or two wraps, then cut it to length so only a hint shows.
  7. Stroke the gill material back, bring it forward over the head, and secure it with a few figure-eight wraps.
  8. Hold the gills forward and whip finish behind them.
  9. Coat the body up to the whip finish with a thin layer of no-tack UV resin and cure it, then add a coat of Sally Hansen's and cure again.
