Bluegill Baby Fat Minnow

Streamer · Largemouth Bass · Smallmouth Bass · Panfish · Intermediate · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook Wide-gape barbless carp/streamer hook (Fulling Mill Bonio), 6-8
  • Thread White 70 denier flat waxed nylon

Materials

  • Bead Tungsten bead, nickel/silver 7/64" (1)
  • Tail Marabou / Spey Chickabou, bluegill colors (olive over yellow/orange) (1 clump)
  • Collar Ice Dub, Callibaetis or peacock (pinch)
  • Head Bruiser Blend Jr dubbing, olive/gray holo over cream/yellow (2 colors)
  • Eyes 3D holographic eyes, super pearl 1/8" (1 pair)

How to tie it

  1. Slide a tungsten bead to the eye and start thread. Tie in a short marabou tail in bluegill tones (olive back, yellow/orange belly) about one shank length for a translucent baitfish silhouette.
  2. Wrap a collar of Callibaetis Ice Dub behind the tail for flash and to prop the head materials.
  3. Build the head with two colors of Bruiser Blend Jr dubbing in a loop, darker olive/gray on top and cream/yellow below, brushing it out as you go.
  4. Sweep the dubbing back, then wet and stroke the head into a broad, flat minnow shape.
  5. Glue 3D holographic eyes to each side of the head, tint the back with a marker if desired, whip finish and cement.
