Blue Wing Olive Thorax

Dry Fly · Trout · Grayling · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry fly hook, 20-16
  • Thread Olive 8/0

Materials

  • Tail Dun microfibetts (Split microfibetts)
  • Body Olive ostrich herl (Fine olive dubbing)
  • Wing Dun microfibetts (Single upright poly or turkey-flat post)
  • Hackle Blue dun hackle (1 dry-fly feather, trimmed underneath)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start olive thread, then wind to the barb.
  2. Split dun microfibetts into a two-fiber V tail one shank length long, propped by a small dubbing ball.
  3. Dub a slim olive body forward to the 65% mark.
  4. Post a single upright dun wing at the front third of the shank.
  5. Wind a blue dun hackle in a thorax style around the wing, then trim the hackle flat underneath so the fly rides low on the film.
  6. Whip finish at the eye and cement.
