Blue Doctor

Wet Fly · Trout · Salmon · Intermediate · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook Standard wet fly (trout size of a salmon pattern), 8-12
  • Thread Black 6/0

Materials

  • Tag Flat silver tinsel and yellow floss (short)
  • Tail Golden pheasant crest (1)
  • Butt Red wool or floss (2 turns)
  • Rib Fine oval silver tinsel (fine)
  • Body Pale blue floss (slim)
  • Hackle Pale blue hen hackle (1)
  • Wing Bronze mallard over mixed dyed fibers (or plain bronze mallard) (1 pair)
  • Head Red tying thread or lacquer (--)

How to tie it

  1. Wrap a short silver-and-yellow tag at the bend, then tie in a golden pheasant crest tail curving up.
  2. Add 2 turns of red wool as a butt, the 'Doctor' family's trademark, like a drop of medicine.
  3. Tie in the oval silver rib and wrap a slim pale blue floss body to the 70% mark; rib with 5 turns.
  4. Wind 2 turns of pale blue hen hackle as a throat.
  5. Roll a bronze mallard wing (the trout-size shortcut for the full married salmon wing) and set it low.
  6. Finish with a red head, also a Doctor signature.
