Blue Damsel

Classic Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry-fly / long-shank dry hook, 10-14
  • Thread Blue or black 8/0

Materials

  • Extended body Blue foam or blue-wrapped detached body (1)
  • Rib Fine clear mono or thread (1 length)
  • Wing White/clear synthetic (Antron or hackle tips) (small)
  • Hackle Grizzly or blue dun hackle (1 feather)
  • Eyes Melted mono or small foam eyes (1 pair)

How to tie it

  1. Form a slim extended body of blue foam or blue thread/floss over-wrapped with clear mono for segmentation, projecting well past the bend to mimic the long damsel abdomen.
  2. Tie the extended body onto the shank and add prominent melted-mono eyes behind the hook eye.
  3. Tie in a sparse wing of clear/white synthetic fibers, splayed low over the back.
  4. Wind a grizzly or blue-dun hackle for legs and flotation, two or three turns.
  5. Whip finish behind the eye and cement.
