Blue Damsel Dry

Dry Fly · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook standard/long dry (Mustad R30), 10-14
  • Thread blue or black 8/0

Materials

  • Abdomen Blue foam strip (or spun blue Antron / old fly line) (1)
  • Wings Light dun poly yarn (or grizzly hackle points) (1 pair)
  • Wing flash Pearl Krystal Flash (few strands)
  • Hackle Grizzly cock hackle (1)
  • Thorax Blue dubbing (as needed)

How to tie it

  1. Lay a thread base and tie in a slim blue foam strip (or old fly line) at the mid-shank, extending well past the bend to form the long slender damsel abdomen.
  2. Return the thread to the thorax and tie in the poly-yarn wings flat and spent (or two grizzly hackle points), splayed with figure-eight wraps.
  3. Add a couple of strands of pearl Krystal Flash over the wings for sparkle.
  4. Tie in a grizzly hackle at the thorax.
  5. Dub a small blue thorax and wind the hackle a few turns through it for support and legs, then tie off.
  6. Whip finish a small head; the foam abdomen floats the long body flush in the film.
