Tyer Recipe

  • Hook TMC 3769 heavy wet fly, short shank, #12-18 (14 favorite)
  • Thread Dark brown Uni 6/0

Materials

  • Bead Silver (also black, gold, red) (1, sized to hook)
  • Ultra wire (rib) Red wire (Brassie size (small on #16 and under))
  • Ice Dub (body) UV Brown (fishes purple) (small noodle)
  • Head cement Clear head cement (1 big drop)

How to tie it

  1. Pinch the barb, slide the bead on, and mount the hook; start the thread right behind the bead with three or four turns. No need for layers of thread.
  2. Jam the end of the red wire up against the bead, tie it in along the near side, and bind it down with near-touching turns back into the bend, then return the thread to the bead leaving just a thin foundation.
  3. Dub a noodle of UV brown Ice Dub, anchor it behind the bead, then wrap backward to the bend, tightening as you go.
  4. Dub back forward, building a cigar taper so the body matches the bead's diameter just behind it.
  5. Reverse-rib the wire forward in open counter-wraps over the body, this shows the rib better and smooths the taper, and take about three wraps behind the bead, then helicopter the wire off.
  6. Put a big drop of head cement behind the bead, then whip finish with a three-turn whip followed by another three-turn whip over it.
  7. Pull out or trim any short stray fibers to finish.
