Reference Recipe

  • Hook 3XL-4XL streamer hook, 8-4
  • Thread Red 3/0

Materials

  • Tail Red buzzer wrap (Section of red duck/goose quill or hackle)
  • Body Red buzzer wrap (Red flat tinsel or ice dubbing)
  • Underwing Red buzzer wrap (Small clump red bucktail)
  • Wing Mottled brown pectoral fins (Matched turkey quill slips)
  • Head/Collar Natural deer (Spun and clipped deer hair)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start red thread, winding back to the barb.
  2. Tie in a short red quill or hackle-fiber tail about half a shank long.
  3. Wrap a red tinsel or ice-dubbing body forward to the 65% mark, leaving room for the head.
  4. Bind a sparse clump of red bucktail as an underwing, then cap it with matched mottled turkey slips tied tent-style over the body.
  5. Spin a clump of natural deer hair at the front, packing it tight against the wing to form a collar.
  6. Add and spin a second clump, then whip finish at the eye.
  7. Trim the deer hair to a broad muddler head, leaving a swept-back collar, and cement the whip.
