Cut a 6-inch piece of red thread and set it aside for the rib, then start the red thread and lay a base back to the start of the bend.
Take several thread wraps 2-3mm around the bend to build a red tag, then return the thread to the start of the bend.
Catch in the loose piece of red thread for the rib, then tie in one strand of peacock herl.
Take the thread forward to about one eye-length behind the eye, then wrap the peacock herl forward in touching turns to form the body; preen the fibers back every couple of wraps if they mat. Secure and trim.
Counter-wrap the red thread rib forward through the body in open turns, zigzagging to avoid trapping herl, and secure it up front.
Tie in a dark hen hackle by the tip and take about two wraps as a soft-hackle collar; catch it off, trim, and preen the fibers back with a few wraps for a swept-back wet-fly look.
Smooth the head area with thread, then tie in 8-10 pheasant tail fibers on top as a wing reaching to the bend, tips rearward.
Fold the excess butts back over the tie-in, build a small ramp of thread, and secure them, then trim the folded fibers halfway down the body to form a short wing case.
Build a visible red head, whip finish, and add a drop of head cement.
