How to tie it
Start red UTC 140 behind the eye and wind back to the bend. The red thread is not incidental. It shows at the head and through the braid and is part of the pattern's look.
Tie in a white micro rabbit zonker strip at the bend as the tail, hide side down, about a shank and a half long. A short dense rabbit tail gives maximum movement per inch, which is what you want swinging in cold, heavy water.
Wind the flat braid forward in touching turns from the bend to the 75% mark. Flat braid lies down without lumps and picks up light from every angle, which is how this fly shows up in stained Great Lakes water.
Tie in a small clump of Fl. Hot Coral UV egg yarn at the 80% mark, stand it up and trim it to a compact ball. Egg and white together is the classic steelhead combination. The fly reads as a minnow with an egg, or simply as two triggers on one hook.
Build a neat red thread head, whip finish, and coat the head with Solarez Bone Dry. Bone Dry gives a thin, tack-free finish that will not bulk up the head.
Fish it on the swing on a sink tip, or dead-drift it under an indicator through steelhead holding water. It is at its best when the water carries some colour.
