Blood Midge CDC

Midge · Trout · Grayling · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Curved scud/emerger hook, 16-22
  • Thread Red 8/0

Materials

  • Body Red buzzer wrap (Red tying thread)
  • Rib Silver metal tape (Extra-small silver wire)
  • Thorax Black ostrich herl (Black Superfine dubbing, a pinch)
  • Wing/collar Dun/white material (One CDC feather)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start red thread, wrapping back around the curve to the bend.
  2. Catch in fine silver wire and build a slim red body forward to the 65% mark.
  3. Rib with 5 open turns of silver wire and tie off.
  4. Tie in a CDC feather by the tip at the 65% mark so the fibers fan back over the body as an emerging wing/collar.
  5. Dub a small black thorax in front of the CDC to cover the tie-in and suggest the head.
  6. Whip finish and add a tiny drop of cement, keeping it clear of the CDC.
