How to tie it

  1. Start the thread right behind the bead and work it down onto the bend of the hook, keeping the body nice and uniform.
  2. Tie in the extra-small silver wire right behind the bead, lay it along the back of the shank and take it down to where the thread stopped.
  3. Wrap the thread back up behind the bead, adding a little taper if wanted.
  4. Wrap the wire forward in spaced turns so gaps show as segmentation, up to right behind the bead.
  5. Take a couple of loose wraps, helicopter the wire off, then take a couple of tighter wraps to secure.
  6. Make a very sparse, tightly twisted noodle of UV pink Ice Dub and wrap it as a small thorax, leaving a small gap between the bead and the thorax.
  7. Strip the barbs from the end of an ostrich herl so a bare stem remains, and tie the stem in at the gap with the spine facing you.
  8. Wrap the herl toward you two or three times at most, cross the thread over to catch it with a couple of loose wraps, then pinch the herl back and take a couple of tight wraps so the fibres sit toward the rear; trim the excess.
  9. Whip finish (he uses a double whip finish) and shear off the thread.
