Black Zonker Skullhead

Streamer · Trout · Smallmouth Bass · Pike · Intermediate · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook 4X long streamer hook, 2-8
  • Thread Black 6/0

Materials

  • Head Fish-Skull (skullhead) or metal cone (1)
  • Underbody/weight Lead-free wire or keel (few wraps)
  • Body Pearl/silver Mylar tubing or Ice Dub (as needed)
  • Wing Black rabbit zonker strip (1 strip)
  • Flash Pearl Krystal Flash (optional) (few strands)

How to tie it

  1. Slide the Fish-Skull head onto the hook and set it aside; add a few wraps of lead-free wire on the shank if extra weight is wanted.
  2. Build a flashy Mylar or Ice Dub body along the shank to imitate a baitfish belly.
  3. Tie down the front of a black rabbit zonker strip at the head and stretch it back over the body, binding the tail end at the bend so the fur pulses over the top.
  4. Add a few strands of flash along the sides if desired.
  5. Slide the Fish-Skull head forward over the thread wraps, secure it with thread and a drop of super glue, then whip finish behind the eye. The metal head sinks the fly and gives it a jigging dive on the pause.
