Classic Recipe

  • Hook Light-wire scud/curved hook (Daiichi 1130 or TMC 2487), 12-16
  • Thread Black 8/0

Materials

  • Body Black snowshoe rabbit or fine dubbing (as needed)
  • Overbody 2mm black tying foam (1 strip)
  • Wing Clear/white sparkle emerger yarn (small tuft)
  • Hackle Black or grizzly dry-fly hackle (1 feather)

How to tie it

  1. Tie in a strip of 2mm black foam at the bend, then dub a small rear ant gaster (bump) and pull the foam over it, binding it at the waist to form the rear segment.
  2. At the waist, tie in a short tuft of clear sparkle yarn as a low wing; these wings double as a balancing indicator so the fly sits low but visible.
  3. Wind a black or grizzly hackle at the waist for legs, two or three turns.
  4. Dub a front thorax segment, pull the remaining foam forward over it and tie down behind the eye to form the head segment.
  5. Whip finish under the foam head and trim the foam to shape.
