Materials

  • Tail Dun hen (captioned 'done hen')
  • Body Stripped peacock quill
  • Dubbing Grey dubbing, similar to muskrat in colour and texture (used in place of muskrat)
  • Wing case Duck quill
  • Hackle Dun hen (captioned 'done hen')

How to tie it

  1. Tie in a small clump of dun hen fibres for the tail, not too long, and wind the thread back to the bend.
  2. Tie in the stripped peacock quill and wind the thread forward to build a relatively smooth, flat underbody.
  3. Wind the peacock quill forward in even, side-by-side turns (not stacked) to form the body.
  4. Bring the thread back and tie in the duck quill wing case.
  5. Add the grey dubbing.
  6. Prepare a hen hackle feather, tie it in and wind it, then push the barbs out of the way.
  7. Pull the wing case over, taking a couple of soft wraps first and then tightening.
  8. Whip finish.
