How to tie it
Tie the Uni-Stretch gills in on a Daiichi 1760 with black thread, whip finish and slide a coffee brown bead into place, then start building the taper.
Tuck copper brown wire in on the near side behind the bead, wrap it down, and cover as much hook and wire as you can with black thread on the way back up. There are a lot of chironomids you would swear are black that turn out on close inspection to be a very dark olive. This is the fly for those.
Cut the black thread away and load Veevus Body Quill in olive (colour code BQ5) into the bobbin. It does not have to go on a bobbin, but it is far easier to handle that way.
Take two or three tight wraps right against the bead, then work down the shank spacing the wraps out a little as you go, leaving a small black butt at the bottom. Those gaps let the black thread show through and are what create the dark olive shade.
Finish building the taper with the quill coming back up the shank, keeping the wraps tight at the top.
Counter-rib with the copper brown wire, not compulsory with body quill, but it protects it. Squeeze the quill tight against the bead as you tie off and it will suck down into the gap.
Whip finish twice and coat with superglue. The glue makes the black bleed through the olive and gives the fly its final super dark olive colour with a quill sheen underneath.
