Materials
Rabbit zonker strip Black rabbit strip (One strip plus a short piece for the collar)
Arizona Simi Seal dubbing Black and red arizona simi seal dubbing (One dubbing loop)
How to tie it
Start black thread on an Ahrex NS110 and tie in a black rabbit zonker strip at the rear, leaving the strip trailing out the back to become both tail and shell back.
Spin a dubbing loop and fill it with black and red Arizona Simi Seal, then brush it out hard before wrapping. The blend of black with red is what gives the fly the dark body with a blood glow that leeches show when they stretch.
Wrap the loop forward, leaving a little room behind the eye. That gap is your working space for the collar in a moment. Crowd it now and the fly ends badly.
Brush all the fibres down, pull the zonker strip over the top matuka-style and tie it off. Laying the hide over the back makes the fly ride with the fur waving off the sides rather than dragging behind.
Trim the excess and spin a second dubbing loop, this time laying a short strip of the same rabbit inside it and trimming the hide out. Spinning rabbit in a loop gives you a mobile collar that no hackle can match.
Wrap that fur loop behind the hook eye as a collar, tie off, trim the loop and whip finish. Strip it through the shallows in the fall.
