Black Jack-Beadhead

Nymph · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook 1x-long nymph hook, 12-18
  • Thread Black 8/0

Materials

  • Bead Silver bead (Silver tungsten bead)
  • Tail Black ostrich herl (Two black goose biots, split)
  • Body Black ostrich herl (Black tying thread, built slim)
  • Rib Silver metal tape (Fine silver wire (optional))
  • Wings White uni stretch (Two white goose biots)

How to tie it

  1. Slide on the silver bead, mount the hook, and start black thread behind the bead.
  2. Tie in two black biots at the bend so they splay into a short V, one shank length long.
  3. Build a slim, glossy black thread body forward to the 70% mark. Kept skinny so the fly cuts through the current and sinks fast.
  4. If ribbing, counter-wrap fine silver wire in 5 open turns and tie off.
  5. Set two white biots flat along the top in a shallow V, tips reaching the bend, and bind them just behind the bead.
  6. Whip finish behind the bead and add a drop of cement.
