  • Hook Deep-water salmon single (low-water single also works), 1
  • Thread Red 8/0 Veevus

Materials

  • Uni-French oval tinsel Silver oval tinsel (small (tag))
  • Saddle hackle barbs White schlappen (small bunch (tail))
  • Uni-French oval tinsel Gold oval tinsel (medium (rib))
  • Floss Black floss (body, 3 passes)
  • Calf tail White (fluorescent shown) (wing, substitute for the original polar bear)
  • Guinea fowl feather Natural partridge (1, one side stripped (collar))
  • UV resin Clear uv resin (glossy head)

How to tie it

  1. Start the red thread just in front of the hook point; tie in the small oval silver tinsel, check coverage, and wrap a neat tag; trim.
  2. Tie in a tail of white saddle-hackle barbs. Softer barbs splay and swim, and slightly uneven tips look more alive (stiff, even barbs per the original if you prefer).
  3. Tie in the medium gold oval rib.
  4. Tie in the black floss in front of the tie-down lump and make three passes back and forward, angling the floss over the lump to smooth it, finishing up on the return; tie off.
  5. Wind the gold rib forward in even turns. It hides any remaining unevenness; tie off.
  6. Rat-style order, wing before hackle: clean the short hairs from a bunch of white calf tail (even it up, no need to stack) and tie the wing in extending back about to the end of the hook; really bind it down and trim.
  7. Strip one side of a natural guinea feather (full feather for a denser collar) and tie it in ahead of the wing; wind the collar, brushing the barbs rearward if the quill spins; let the quill break or trim it.
  8. Sweep everything back, build a neat head, whip finish, and coat with UV resin for a glossy head.
