Wet Fly · Trout · Salmon · Intermediate · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook Standard wet fly (trout size of a salmon pattern), 8-12
  • Thread Black 6/0

Materials

  • Tag Flat silver tinsel and yellow floss (short)
  • Tail Golden pheasant crest (1)
  • Butt Red wool or floss (2 turns)
  • Rib Fine oval silver tinsel (fine)
  • Body Black floss (slim)
  • Hackle Claret or black hen hackle (1)
  • Wing Bronze mallard (or mixed married strips) (1 pair)
  • Head Red tying thread or lacquer (--)

How to tie it

  1. Wrap the silver-and-yellow tag and tie in an upswept golden pheasant crest tail.
  2. Add 2 turns of red wool as the Doctor butt.
  3. Tie in the silver rib, wrap the slim black floss body to the 70% mark, and rib with 5 turns.
  4. Wind 2 turns of claret hen hackle as a throat. The claret against black is the fly's quiet richness.
  5. Set a rolled bronze mallard wing low over the body.
  6. Finish with the signature red head.
