Classic Recipe
- Hook Standard wet fly (trout size of a salmon pattern), 8-12
- Thread Black 6/0
Materials
- Tag Flat silver tinsel and yellow floss (short)
- Tail Golden pheasant crest (1)
- Butt Red wool or floss (2 turns)
- Rib Fine oval silver tinsel (fine)
- Body Black floss (slim)
- Hackle Claret or black hen hackle (1)
- Wing Bronze mallard (or mixed married strips) (1 pair)
- Head Red tying thread or lacquer (--)
How to tie it
- Wrap the silver-and-yellow tag and tie in an upswept golden pheasant crest tail.
- Add 2 turns of red wool as the Doctor butt.
- Tie in the silver rib, wrap the slim black floss body to the 70% mark, and rib with 5 turns.
- Wind 2 turns of claret hen hackle as a throat. The claret against black is the fly's quiet richness.
- Set a rolled bronze mallard wing low over the body.
- Finish with the signature red head.
