Grab the Pheasant tippets by the tips, snip off eight or ten and pull the main feather away so the tips stay aligned. Tie them in as a tail about a body length long and bury the butts under thread.
Advance the thread to about a quarter of the way back from the eye. Pair two Natural duck slips convex sides together so they flare, tips pointing forward, and set them with a pinch wrap and a couple more; pull them upright and put a few wraps behind to prop them.
Take the thread to the rear, catch in two strands of peacock herl and wrap the rear body, going back a little over the tail butts if they flare; bind off. If a herl breaks, back the thread off and start again with fresh strands.
Catch in a single strand of black floss and wrap the band as wide as you like, leaving room for more herl in front of it; bind off.
With the same peacock herl, take a couple more wraps in front of the band up to behind the wings and bind off there.
Catch the Black dry fly hackle in right behind the wings, take one or two turns behind the wings to prop them up and three to five in front; bind off and snip the stem.
Form the head and whip finish, then clean up stray fibers.
