Black Bead Bird's Nest

Reference Recipe

  • Hook 1X-long nymph hook, 12-18
  • Thread Tan or brown 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Bead Black bead (1 sized to hook)
  • Tail Wood-duck or lemon mallard (small bunch fibers)
  • Rib Fine copper (wire)
  • Body Natural tan-brown (Australian opossum) (dubbing)
  • Legs/Collar Wood-duck or mallard (fibers swept around thorax)

How to tie it

  1. Slide a black bead to the eye and mount the hook.
  2. Tie in a small bunch of wood-duck fibers as a short tail at the bend, and bind in the copper rib.
  3. Dub a slightly tapered natural body forward to the thorax.
  4. Rib the body with copper wire in 4-5 open turns and tie off.
  5. Tie in a bunch of wood-duck fibers and distribute them around the shank as a sweeping legs/collar behind the bead.
  6. Dub a touch more over the tie-in to blend, whip finish behind the bead.
