Black Back Emerger

Emerger · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Curved emerger/scud hook, 16-22
  • Thread Black 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Trailing shuck Brown/amber material (few Antron fibers)
  • Abdomen Olive, gray, or tan material (fine dubbing)
  • Shellback Black floss (1 strip Thin Skin or dark biot/dubbing over back)
  • Wing Natural dun wing bud (1-2 CDC feathers or Z-lon)
  • Thorax Dark permanent marker (fine dubbing)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the curved hook and run thread to the bend.
  2. Tie in a short Antron trailing shuck at the bend.
  3. Bind in the black shellback strip, then dub a slim tapered abdomen forward to the thorax.
  4. Pull the black shellback over the top and bind it, leaving the underside light to give the two-tone black-back look.
  5. Tie in a CDC or Z-lon wing standing up, then dub a small thorax to prop it.
  6. Whip finish a small neat head behind the eye.
