Black & Peacock Wet Fly

Wet Fly · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard wet-fly hook, 10-14
  • Thread Black 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Body Peacock ice dub (2-3 herls, twisted)
  • Rib Fine silver (wire (optional, for durability))
  • Hackle Black hackle (1 soft hen hackle)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and lay a thread base to the bend.
  2. Tie in two or three peacock herls (and a fine wire rib if using) at the bend.
  3. Twist the herls into a rope and wrap forward to the 80% mark for a plump, iridescent body.
  4. Counter-rib with the wire in 4-5 open turns to protect the herl, then tie off.
  5. Tie in a soft black hen hackle and take one to two full turns for a swept-back collar.
  6. Sweep the fibers rearward, build a small head, and whip finish.
