Reference Recipe

  • Hook Salmon/steelhead wet-fly or streamer hook, 2-6
  • Thread Black 6/0 (140 denier)

Materials

  • Tail Orange permanent marker (hackle fibers or marabou)
  • Body Black ostrich herl (chenille or dubbing)
  • Rib Silver or copper material (oval tinsel)
  • Wing/Collar Black marabou over orange (marabou)
  • Hackle Orange hackle (1 schlappen/hen collar)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and lay a thread base to the bend.
  2. Tie in an orange tail about one shank length, and bind in the oval tinsel rib.
  3. Wrap a black chenille or dubbed body forward to the 70% mark.
  4. Rib the body with the tinsel in 5-6 evenly spaced turns and tie off.
  5. Tie in an orange marabou or hackle underwing, then a black marabou over-wing for a dark, mobile silhouette.
  6. Wrap an orange collar hackle and sweep it back, then build the head and whip finish.
