Reference Recipe

  • Hook Intruder shank with trailing octopus stinger hook on braid, 1/0-2 (shank + trailing stinger hook)
  • Thread Color to match (orange, pink, chartreuse) 6/0 (140 denier) or GSP

Materials

  • Trailing hook N/A (#1/0-2 octopus hook on 30-50 lb braid loop)
  • Tail Matching color material (marabou plus sparse bucktail and flash)
  • Body Matching color material (palmered marabou (schlappen))
  • Flash Pearl/color flash (Flashabou or Krystal Flash)
  • Wing/Back Matching leather strip (2 hen saddle feathers, tented)
  • Collar Matching leather strip (guinea or schlappen hackle)
  • Eyes Gold/silver material (bead-chain or dumbbell (optional))

How to tie it

  1. Rig a trailing octopus stinger hook on a braid loop and lash it to the shank so it rides point-up a short reach behind.
  2. Start thread at the rear of the shank and tie in a marabou tail with a few strands of bucktail and flash for a loud, wiggly base.
  3. Tie in a marabou or schlappen feather and palmer it forward to form a mobile body, adding flash along the way.
  4. Tent two matching hen saddle feathers over the back, curving down like a shrimp shell.
  5. Wrap a soft guinea or schlappen collar to frame the head and sweep it back.
  6. Add bead-chain or dumbbell eyes at the front if you want more dive, then build the head.
  7. Whip finish and coat the head.
