Bead, 1/8 Gold bead (1)
Marabou Black marabou (Tail)
Ultra wire, medium or large Red wire (One length (balancing arm))
Polar chenille Black and red polar chenille (Body)
How to tie it
Dress a size 8 hook with a 1/8 gold bead and black thread, then tie black marabou in at the bend with a couple of loops underneath to prop the tail up.
Tie medium or large red wire in alongside the shank and wrap it a few times around the hook up to about the two-thirds point, then tie it off so the loose end stands straight up. That standing wire is the balancing arm and the whole point of the pattern.
Leave the wire long for now so it stays out of your way; you trim it to length at the very end.
Tie black and red polar chenille in at the rear and wrap it forward, stroking the fibres back with each turn and taking one tight wrap right against the wire before skipping to the other side of it.
Continue to the bead with two full wraps there, pull snug, capture the chenille and trim.
Whip finish, then bend the wire into one and a half or two wraps and trim it, tucking the end in.
Dip the finished fly in warm water and let it dry. The warm water sets the fibres so it holds its shape. To fish it balanced, tie your tippet to the hook eye, run it back and wrap the wire over it, then take the tippet back to your swivel. Leave the wire off and it fishes as a normal leech, which is why it is called bipolar.
