Biot Pupa

Nymph · Midge · Trout · Intermediate · 2 versions

Classic Recipe

  • Hook Curved caddis pupa / scud hook, 12-16
  • Thread Brown 8/0

Materials

  • Abdomen Turkey biot (brown, olive or tan) (1)
  • Rib Fine gold wire (1 length)
  • Thorax Olive or brown dry-fly dubbing (as needed)
  • Gas bubble White Antron or Trigger Point fibers (small tuft)
  • Legs Partridge fibers (small bunch)

How to tie it

  1. Tie in a length of fine gold wire and a single turkey biot at the bend, notched edge trailing so it wraps a segmented, ribbed body.
  2. Wrap the biot forward over the rear two-thirds of the hook to form a clean segmented abdomen and tie off.
  3. Counter-wrap the gold wire forward in 4-5 turns to reinforce the biot and add segmentation, then tie off.
  4. Tie in a short tuft of white Antron over the top as an emerging gas bubble, a key trigger on rising pupae.
  5. Dub a fuller olive or brown thorax.
  6. Sweep a small bunch of partridge fibers under the thorax as legs, whip finish and cement.
