Biot Epoxy Stone

Reference Recipe

  • Hook 2X-long curved nymph/stonefly hook, 6-12
  • Thread Brown or black 6/0 (140 denier)

Materials

  • Weight Lead-free (8-12 wraps fine wire)
  • Tails/Antennae Brown permanent marker (2 goose biots, split)
  • Body Brown or golden material (turkey biot or Stretch material)
  • Wingcase Dark mottled wing slip (1 turkey/Thin Skin section)
  • Thorax Brown permanent marker (coarse dubbing, picked out)
  • Coating Clear head cement (epoxy or UV resin over back)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook, wrap a lead-free underbody over the thorax area, and start thread.
  2. Tie in two goose biots at the bend, split into a wide V for tails.
  3. Wrap a biot or stretch body forward to the 60% mark for a segmented abdomen.
  4. Tie in the wingcase material and dub a fat, picked-out thorax to just behind the eye.
  5. Pull the wingcase over the thorax and bind it down, then tie in two biot antennae angling forward over the eye.
  6. Whip finish, then coat the abdomen and wingcase with a thin layer of epoxy or UV resin and cure while rotating.
  7. Pick out the thorax dubbing to suggest legs.
