Bionic Spider

Dry Fly · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry-fly hook, 10-14
  • Thread Black 6/0 (140 denier)

Materials

  • Body Black (also brown) (2mm closed-cell foam, layered into two lobes)
  • Legs Black barred rubber legs (3-4 strands round rubber)
  • Indicator Hi-vis orange (small foam dot)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and lay a thread base across the shank.
  2. Bind a strip of black foam at the bend, cinch it once at mid-shank, then fold and bind again near the eye to form two rounded body lobes.
  3. At the waist, figure-8 in three to four rubber legs so they splay evenly to both sides. Spider legs should be long, roughly one and a half shank lengths.
  4. Take a couple of thread turns to lock the leg splay and keep the lobes distinct.
  5. Add a small hi-vis foam dot on the front lobe so you can track it.
  6. Whip finish under the front lobe and trim leg tips even.
