Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry-fly hook, 12-16
  • Thread Tan 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Body Cinnamon (also black, red) (1/8-inch pre-cut foam cylinder)
  • Legs Copper-brown barred rubber legs (1 strand Sexi-Floss/rubber, tied at midpoint)
  • Hackle Dark ginger hackle (1 dry-fly hackle, 3-4 turns)
  • Wing Dark dun material (1 pinch Trigger Point / poly wing)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and lay a short thread base across the shank.
  2. Align a pre-cut foam cylinder along the top of the shank with the hot end reaching just past the eye, and bind it down over the hook point.
  3. Advance the thread and cinch the foam again at mid-shank to pinch off the rear gaster segment.
  4. Tie in a strand of barred rubber leg by its midpoint on each side so a leg kicks fore and aft.
  5. Tie in a dark dun wing over the thorax, then a ginger hackle, and take 3-4 turns of hackle through the thorax.
  6. Bind and trim the hackle, whip finish under the front of the foam, and trim the legs to length.
  7. Seal the tie-down wraps with a drop of flexible cement.
