Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry-fly hook, 12-16
  • Thread Black or tan 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Body Black or cinnamon (1/8-inch pre-cut foam cylinder)
  • Legs Barred rubber (1 strand tied at midpoint)
  • Collar Natural dun wing bud (1-2 CDC feathers)
  • Hackle Grizzly or ginger hackle (1 dry-fly hackle)
  • Indicator Hi-vis (small poly tuft)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and lay a thin thread base.
  2. Bind a foam cylinder along the top so the rear segment overhangs the bend and the front reaches the eye, cinching once at mid-shank to define two segments.
  3. Tie a barred rubber leg by its midpoint on each side at the waist.
  4. Tie in one or two CDC feathers and take a couple of turns to build a soft, buggy thorax collar. The CDC is the upgrade that adds movement and float.
  5. Wrap a hackle through the thorax over the CDC, 3-4 turns, and secure.
  6. Add a small hi-vis poly tuft on top for visibility, whip finish, and trim the legs.
  7. Touch the wraps with flexible cement.
