Bighorn Scud

Nymph · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Curved scud/pupa hook, 14-18
  • Thread Tan or olive 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Weight Lead-free (6-8 wraps fine wire (optional))
  • Shellback Clear scud back thin skin (1 strip Scud Back or thin plastic)
  • Body Gray-olive or tan-pink material (scud/Sow-Scud dubbing, picked out)
  • Rib Fine gold (wire)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the curved hook and add a few turns of fine wire underbody if you want it to ride deep.
  2. Start thread and bind a strip of clear shellback and the ribbing wire in at the bend.
  3. Dub a plump, buggy body forward along the curve to just behind the eye.
  4. Pull the shellback tight over the back and bind it down at the eye.
  5. Counter-wrap the wire rib forward in 5-6 evenly spaced turns to segment the back, then helicopter off the excess.
  6. Pick out the dubbing underneath to suggest legs, build a small head, and whip finish.
