Materials

  • Hook Size 14, captioned as 'diary 135'
  • Thread Red, captioned as 'red unit thread is six hot'
  • Hackle White saddle hackle, 10 to 15 fibers stripped off
  • Wire Gold brassy wire
  • Back Large mylar (flashback piece)
  • Dubbing Dark orange / amber, put on loosely

How to tie it

  1. Attach the thread toward the back of the hook.
  2. Strip about 10 to 15 fibers from a white saddle hackle and tie them in at the back, binding materials along nearly the whole shank.
  3. Tie in the gold brassy wire the same way, along the length of the shank.
  4. Cut a piece of large mylar for the flashback and tie it in.
  5. Apply the dark orange or amber dubbing fairly loosely, leaving room for the head.
  6. Bring the mylar over the top and tie it down with a few wraps behind and a couple in front, then make a quick whip finish.
  7. Wrap the wire forward in about four segments.
  8. Tie the wire off up top once, then pull it down and tie it off along the side to make a ramp for the head.
  9. Whip finish, then pull the extra dubbing out on both sides with a bodkin.
  10. Cut the bottom of the dubbing straight across and add head cement.
