Tyer Recipe

  • Hook Mustad pike/streamer hook, Large pike size (heard as 'Mustad 5/0' on video)
  • Thread Black 3/0

Materials

  • Monster Hair (synthetic) Black ostrich herl (about 2 in clump, roughly twice the shank (tail))
  • Deer hair Black deer hair (several clumps, spun (body))

How to tie it

  1. Lay a base layer of thread back to the bend of the hook.
  2. Cut about two inches of black Monster Hair, roughly double the hook length, and tie it in at the bend as a long flowing tail; pike key on that long tail, so keep it long.
  3. Clean and spin a clump of black deer hair at the rear of the shank, pulling tight so it flares, and pack it back against the tail.
  4. Continue spinning and packing clumps of deer hair up the shank until you reach the eye.
  5. Whip finish at the head and remove the hook from the vise for trimming.
  6. Trim the bottom of the body fairly flat.
  7. Trim the sides and top with a taper, close-cropped at the eye, full and bushy toward the rear, rounding the body as you go and leaving the rearmost hairs long over the tail.
